Thank you both for your responses. I agree with you Whit. I think we do need good personalities or role models to coalesce around in order to form a robust philosophy that will be a guide us in this time of crisis. And I like that phrase, “unfreezing” our attention Joseph. Thats exactly what it feels like to have my attention frozen or captured by the left hemisphere.

I believe Iain Mcgilchrist is very aware of walking a tightrope between informing people of his insights and avoiding the danger of telling people what they should do. I believe people naturally want to find someone bigger than themselves who’s advice they can place their trust in implicitly. Generally people who are attracted to this role feel the need to live up to this image of solidity and when they have doubts they ignore them or play them down as they believe they will lose their following. This is a slippery slope that results in their aim being to calm their ego rather than doing the right thing.

One of the main things I have learned (or remembered) from Iain’s work is the vital importance of learning to ride the wave of uncertainty. Once I’m certain of where I’m going I inevitably run out of energy and get dumped on the beach and end up thinking,’shit I’m back here again!’

Hi, I am reading (very slowly) Madness and modernism by Louis Sass. Iain has mentioned this book when talking about autism and schizophrenia being on the same spectrum. My understanding is that people with both an autistic process and a schizophrenic process ‘get stuck’ in viewing the world almost exclusively from the left hemispheres perspective of reality. They find it hard to stop putting the world under a microscope and step into the left hemisphere more holistic view of the world.

Hi Jena, welcome. I agree with Eleanor. I often wonder are the people who are drawn towards Iain’s work generally quite introspective people who tend to need long periods of time on their own to think things through deeply.

Speaking for myself when I was very young I couldnt really understand the disparity between how the grown ups where telling us children how the world was and my actual experience of the world. So I believe I went into my head as a way of trying to work things out. Its only in my later years that I am starting to appreciatte the importance of letting other people into my head and heart.

    Good to meet you.

I was interested to notice that as I read about a conflict between Iain Mcgilchrist and Raymond Tallis that I had a gut reaction to side with Iain before even hearing the other side. I remember Iain relaying a jewish story about a man asking God which of the Rabbis opinions was correct and God replied ‘you are all correct’.

    Hi Joseph,

I like your art work. I think its vitally important in these times that everyone contribute their creativity to the world as a counterbalance to the constant flow of shallow media that is constantly reenforcing its deluded perspective on reality.
