“We are part of nature, not separate from it.” (Iain McGilchrist).

If you care about the traditions of family farming and have an appreciation for the land and countryside, I couldn’t recommend two books by James Rebanks more highly – I think they chime very closely with Iain’s thinking.

In ‘The Shepherd’s Life’, Rebanks beautifully captures the essence of rural life: “I am walking in the footsteps of my ancestors, and living a life they lived.” This memoir is a heartfelt tribute to the enduring connection between family, land, and tradition.

Then there’s ‘English Pastoral’, where he reflects on our relationship with nature: “The essential thing we know about the future…is that it is unpredictable.” This book urges us to cherish and protect our heritage while adapting to change.

Both works offer a nostalgic journey through the joys and challenges of family farming, reminding us of the importance of preserving these time-honoured traditions.

I studiously avoid making political comments online, but I am SO concerned that yesterday’s Budget in the U.K. will be the death knell for our family farms.
